Community involvement can seem like a lofty goal, but it is easier to reach if you feel passionately about the people or organizations. Here at Petty Dental, we actively prioritize making our area a better place to be by helping organizations and causes we believe in. In addition to our work with the Tullahoma library, 5 Loaves 4 Kids, and several local schools, helping young men achieve some of their life goals through the Boy Scouts of America (Scouts BSA) has personally given me a sense of satisfaction.
How It All Started
Although my own scouting experience as a young teen was very limited, my youngest son, as a first-grader, convinced me to return to scouting with contagious enthusiasm. We camped together, made rope bridges, cooked campfire meals, and participated in service projects such as food drives. It was fun! Helping his cub scout pack morphed into leading the entire pack as Cubmaster for two years. I had forgotten how to have real fun, but the Cub Scouts corrected that deficiency.
Serving and Growing Through BSA
As my son moved into Boy Scouts, I served on the troop committee and later became a member of the district committee. This committee serves all the scouting units in a multi-county area, helping them with policy, planning, fundraising, and special activities such as area-wide camporees and volunteer recognition events.
Leadership in Helping Others Advance
After a decade of service on the district committee, a good friend asked if I would serve on the District Advancement Committee. This small group of veteran scouters monitors and encourages scouts of all ages to move up the ranks by achieving the next scouting level (Tenderfoot, Second Class, First Class, Star, Life, and Eagle). Through some unexpected events, I became Advancement Chair and now enjoy some of my most satisfying scouting experiences.
The Rewards of Giving Back
The most rewarding part of this position is the interactions with Life Scouts trying to reach Eagle, the highest rank in scouting. This involves reviewing and approving Eagle Service Projects, serving on Boards of Review for prospective Eagles, and celebrating their achievements at Eagle Courts of Honor. Their dedication is inspiring!
Ultimately, making a difference in Tullahoma doesn’t have to be a grand gesture, but when you love what you do and are willing to give some time, you can witness amazing things. What started out as a bonding activity with my son has become an important part of my life. Through my service in BSA, I’ve loved helping teens accomplish their goals, learn new skills, and serve the community. Observing the poise, confidence, and character of so many hard-working young people gives me hope for the future.
